I was instantly attracted to this little boy named Quirt with his team of oxen at “The Artist's Ride”, a professional photo shoot in South Dakota. I chose this subject to depict the use of oxen in the westward movement. Settlers moving west often used oxen to pull their wagons because they were much, much stronger than horses and cheeper to buy. They didn't need as much water, could survive on eating grass along the way and you didn't need as many to pull a wagon, unlike horses, with which you needed many. They were also used to plow the land and work the fields. I loved the harmony and mutual trust Quirt had with Smokey and Hayden. I chose to do this painting of them just hanging out for a rest period from the hot summer sun.
