Native peoples have used feathers from various birds for a millennium, for rituals, ceremonies, and for decorative purposes. Birds were regarded as the highest spirit animal on earth and feathers were used to carry prayers to the Great Spirit. They believe that the spirit and the gift of the bird remain with the feathers and can be called on to help them. Feathers are used to clear a space, and, when used with burning sage, they fan prayers up to the Great Spirit. Turkey feathers were used for the hair tie and feather fan in this painting.
